The Philadelphia 76ers sign guard Royal Ivey

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Thursday 24 July 2008 at 9:52 am

The 76ers have signed reserve guard Royal Ivey to a 2-year contract. The 26-year old Ivey should be able to give the Sixers 15-20 decent minutes per night. He played in 75 games (20 starts) for the Bucks last season and he averaged 19.2 minutes, 5.6 points, 1.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. Don’t expect big numbers out of Ivey but he is a solid bench player and he should be worth what the Sixers are paying him (league minimum). Ivey has now played in 263 games (109 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 14.3 minutes, 4.0 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.

The Philadelphia 76ers sign forward Elton Brand

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Wednesday 9 July 2008 at 10:40 am

The Philadelphia 76ers have signed power forward Elton Brand to a 5-year, $82 million dollar contract. The 29-year old Brand missed most of last season recovering from a torn ACL but he’s healthy right now. Brand played in 8 games (6 starts) with the Clippers last season and he averaged 34.3 minutes, 17.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.9 blocked shots per game. The Sixers expect Brand to give them a huge boost on offense as he will likely be the go to man down low. Brand has now played in 614 games (609 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 38.3 minutes, 20.3 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.1 blocked shots. This was a great signing for the Sixers as Brand will help them big time on both ends of the basketball court.

The Philadelphia 76ers trade with the Timberwolves to create salary cap space

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Wednesday 9 July 2008 at 9:25 am

The Philadelphia 76ers wanted to clear salary cap space so that they could sign free agent forward Elton Brand. With that in mind they traded G/F Rodney Carney, C Calvin Booth and a future 1st round pick to the T-Wolves for a future 2nd round pick. The 76ers weren’t happy with Carney’s development so they agreed to part with him. Carney played in 70 games (6 starts) for the 76ers last season and he averaged 14.8 minutes, 6.6 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. Carney finishes his career with the Sixers having played in 137 games (41 starts) and he averaged 16.1 minutes, 6.2 points, 2.0 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. 32-year old center Calvin Booth won’t be missed much by the Sixers. He played in 31 games (0 starts) for the Sixers last season and he averaged 6.6 minutes, 0.8 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game. The Sixers also exchanged a future first round pick to the Timberwolves for a future 2nd round pick. But, to get Elton Brand this was a small price to pay.

The Philadelphia 76ers waive Gordan Giricek

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Sunday 2 March 2008 at 3:40 pm

The Sixers have waived guard Gordan Giricek. Giricek played in 12 games for the 76ers after he was acquired for Kyle Korver and he averaged 9.2 minutes, 3.1 points, 1.2 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game. He only shot 31.7% from the floor and shooting is his only real skill so the Sixers told him to get out of Dodge.

The Philadelphia 76ers acquire Gordan Giricek from the Jazz

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,Uncategorized by alleyoop on Thursday 3 January 2008 at 6:32 pm

The 76ers have traded forward Kyle Korver to the Utah Jazz for shooting guard Gordan Giricek and a conditional first round pick. Giricek has played in 2 games so far for the Sixers and he has averaged 13.5 minutes, 5.0 points, 1.0 rebound and 0.5 assists per game. For the season, Giricek has played in 24 games and he has averaged 12.8 minutes, 4.4 points, 1.4 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game. Giricek is a solid player and a good shooter but he was in Jerry Sloan’s Dog House for being soft. The Sixers hope he can give them solid production off of the bench.

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,Injuries,Rookie Report by alleyoop on Wednesday 21 November 2007 at 6:47 pm

Rookie forward Herbert Hill is out indefinately after undergoing surgery for torn cartilage in his left knee. He hasn’t played a game yet this season but the Sixers will miss him because of how poorly they have started out this season.

The Philadelphia 76ers release rookie guard Derrick Byars

Blogged under Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,Rookie Report by alleyoop on Friday 26 October 2007 at 10:56 am

The 76ers have waived rookie guard Derrick Byars. Byars only played in 1 game this pre-season and he scored 2 points, grabbed 2 rebounds and stole the ball 1 time in 14 minutes. Byars just fell too far behind the guards in front of him but he might get a shot with some other team.

The Philadelphia 76ers sign center Calvin Booth

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page by alleyoop on Tuesday 11 September 2007 at 11:43 am

The 76ers have signed reserve center Calvin Booth to replace Steven Hunter as Samuel Dalembert’s backup at center. Booth is known most for his defense because he’s not a good offensive player. He played in 44 games (1 start) last season for the Wizards and he averaged 8.6 minutes, 1.6 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. He hit 47% of his shots from the floor and 75.3% from the free throw line.

Booth has now played in 327 games (83 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 12.9 minutes, 3.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, 0.4 assists and 1.0 block per game. He has hit 45.3% of his shots from the floor and 75.3% of his shots from the free throw line during his career. Don’t expect a whole lot of him when he’s on the court but he won’t hurt the team when he’s on the floor.

The Philadelphia 76ers acquire PF Reggie Evans and F Ricky Sanchez from the Nuggets

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page by alleyoop on Tuesday 11 September 2007 at 11:06 am

The 76ers have traded backup center Steven Hunter and 2nd year small forward Bobby Jones to the Nuggets for PF Reggie Evans and the draft rights to forward Ricky Sanchez. This move was all about adding more defense and rebounding to the Sixers and Evans definately will provide that. The 6’8″, 245 pound power forward played in 66 games (11 starts) last season for the Nuggets and he averaged 17.1 minutes, 4.9 points, 7.0 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game. He shoots most of his shots at close range which explains why he hit 54.4% from the floor and 49.7% from the free throw line.

Evans has now played in 354 games in his NBA career (202 starts) and he has averaged 19.9 minutes, 4.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game. He has shot 48.2% from the floor in his career and 52.8% from the free throw line. This was an excellent move by the Sixers who should start Evans at power forward. He would probably average a double-double if he played 35 minutes a game and he would be one of the leading rebounders in the NBA. He just needs the minutes to prove it and the Sixers might give them to him.
