The Philadelphia 76ers sign Chris Quinn

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Tuesday 28 September 2010 at 1:41 pm

The 76ers have signed 27-year old point guard Chris Quinn. Quinn played in 25 games (0 starts) for the Nets last season and he averaged 8.9 minutes, 2.2 points, 0.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. He has now played in 193 games (26 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 15.2 minutes, 5.2 points, 1.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. Quinn has shot 39% from three point range in his career and that is what likely caught the Sixers’ eye. But, I still don’t see him being any better than the #3 point guard for the Sixers this year.

UPDATE: (10/21/2010) – The Sixers have released Chris Quinn.

The Philadelphia 76ers acquire Darius Songaila and Craig Brackins from the Hornets

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Thursday 23 September 2010 at 1:04 pm

The 76ers have acquired 32-year old power forward Darius Songaila and 22-year old rookie power forward Craig Brackins from the Hornets for 29-year old SG Willie Green and 24-year old power forward Jason Smith. Songaila played in 75 games (1 start) for the Hornets last season and he averaged 18.8 minutes, 7.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game. He has now played in 485 games (79 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 18.9 minutes, 7.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. Songaila will likely backup Thaddeus Young at power forward this year. Rookie 6’10″, 230 pound Craig Brackins was a first round pick in the NBA Draft last June. He played in 31 games at Iowa State last season and he averaged 35.1 minutes, 16.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 blocked shots per game. Brackins played in 95 games in his three years at Iowa State and he averaged 31.8 minutes, 16.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 blocked shot per game. Brackins has a nice upside but the Sixers will likely bring him along slowly do to the depth they have in front of him.

Wille Green played in 73 games (18 starts) for the 76ers last season and he averaged 21.3 minutes, 8.7 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. He played in 422 games (211 starts) in his 7 years with the Sixers and he averaged 21.8 minutes, 9.4 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. Jason Kapono and Jodie Meeks will see a bump in minutes with Green off to the Big Easy. Jason Smith played in 56 games (2 starts) for the Sixers last year and he averaged 11.8 minutes, 3.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game. He played in 132 games (3 starts) in his three years with the Sixers and he averaged 13.4 minutes, 4.0 points, 2.8 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. Songaila will replace Smith this year and Brackins will get his big chance down the road. I like this trade for the Sixers as Brackins could be a good player down the road.

The Philadelphia 76ers ink Tony Battie

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Wednesday 21 July 2010 at 3:13 pm

The Philadelphia 76ers have signed 34-year old center Tony Battie to a contract. Details weren’t available yet. Battie played in 15 games (0 starts) for the Nets last season and he averaged 8.9 minutes, 2.4 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game. He has now played in 772 games (418 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 22.0 minutes, 6.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game. Battie will likely give the Sixers 10-15 solid minutes per game in 2010-11.

The Philadelphia 76ers trade Samuel Dalembert to the Kings

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Thursday 17 June 2010 at 5:24 pm

The Philadelphia 76ers have traded 29-year old center Samuel Dalembert to the Kings for 30-year old small forward Andres Nocioni and 22-year old center Spencer Hawes. Dalembert played in 82 games (80 starts) for the 76ers last season in which he averaged 25.9 minutes, 8.1 points, 9.6 rebounds, 0.8 assists and 1.8 blocked shots per game. Dalembert played eight years for the Sixers appearing in 582 games (491 starts) in which he averaged 26.4 minutes, 8.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, 0.5 assists and 1.9 blocked shots per game. Dalembert finishes his career #8 in rebounds (4,844) and #2 in blocked shots (1,131) in Sixers’ history. Andres Nocioni will likely be the backup small forward for the Sixers in 2010-11. He played in 75 games (28 starts) for the Kings last season and he averaged 19.7 minutes, 8.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game. Nocioni has now played in 449 games (185 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 24.6 minutes, 11.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. Hawes will likely backup Elton Brand who appears to be moving to center for the 2010-11 NBA season. Hawes played in 72 games (59 starts) for the Kings last season and he averaged 26.4 minutes, 10.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 blocked shots per game. He has now played in 220 games (118 starts) in his 3 years in the NBA and he has averaged 23.2 minutes, 8.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 blocked shot per game. Hawes could very well be the Sixers starting center down the road. With this trade the Sixers have picked up offense at the cost of defense and rebounding.

The Philadelphia 76ers are going to name Doug Collins as their new head coach tomorrow

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Thursday 20 May 2010 at 9:35 pm

The 76ers have signed 57-year old Doug Collins to be the new head coach. Collins last coached in 2002-03 with the Wizards and he led them to a 37-45 (45.1%) record missing the playoffs. He has 8 years of head coaching experience in the NBA and he has compiled a 332-287 (53.6%) record during the regular season and he is 15-23 (39.5%) in the post season. He is famous for being Michael Jordan’s first coach in Chicago before he was replaced by the now legendary Phil Jackson. Collins will likely be a huge improvement over Eddie Jordan but that won’t be too hard to do.

The Philadelphia 76ers fire Eddie Jordan

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Thursday 15 April 2010 at 12:42 pm

The Sixers decided they saw more than enough of head coach Eddie Jordan, firing him after only one season on the job. The Sixers were 27-55 on the season and 12-29 at home which is really pathetic. The Sixers were outscored by an average of 101.6-97.7 per night this year. It just seemed like the 76ers didn’t have any direction from Jordan despite the team having some talent. Good riddance.

Allen Iverson leaves the Phildelphia 76ers

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Monday 22 February 2010 at 4:13 pm

Allen Iverson has left the Philadelphia 76ers due to personal reasons. This might very well end his time with the Sixers. Iverson has played in 25 games (24 starts) for the Sixers this season and he was averaging 31.9 minutes, 13.9 points, 3.0 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. A.I. leaving the team will likely get Lou Williams back into the starting lineup. Williams has played in 43 games (27 starts) for the Sixers this season and he is averaging 30.3 minutes, 14.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game. Williams was the starting point guard for the Sixers when the season started but he got injured and when he came back they decided to start rookie Jrue Holiday in his old spot. Willie Green will also see a bump in P.T. without Iverson around. Green has played in 50 games (15 starts) for the Sixers this season and he is averaging 21.4 minutes, 8.7 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.

The Philadelphia 76ers acquire Jodie Meeks from the Bucks

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Thursday 18 February 2010 at 6:35 pm

The 76ers have acquired 22-year old shooting guard Jodie Meeks and 33-year old center Francisco Elson from the Bucks for 28-year old guard Royal Ivey, 30-year old center Primoz Brezec and a 2nd round pick. Meeks has played in 41 games (0 starts) for the Bucks this season and he is averaging 11.9 minutes, 4.1 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game. Despite only shooting 36.2% from the floor in his rookie year Meeks does have by far the largest upside of the players involved in this trade. Elson has played in 11 games (0 starts) for the Bucks this season and he is averaging 5.6 minutes, 0.9 points, 1.2 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game. Elson has now played in 404 games (148 starts) in his NBA career and he is averaging 16.3 minutes, 3.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game.

Royal Ivey played in 26 games (0 starts) for the 76ers this season and he averaged 9.1 minutes, 2.7 points, 1.0 rebound and 0.7 assists per game. Brezec played in only 7 games (0 starts) for the Sixers this season and he was averaging 5.1 minutes, 0.7 points and 1.8 rebounds per game.

The Sixers didn’t give up much and they got the best player in the trade (Meeks) and a expiring contract (Elson) so I give them a small win here.

The Philadelphia 76ers invite a couple of veterans to training camp

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Saturday 19 September 2009 at 3:15 pm

The Sixers have invited 24-year old SG Sean Singletary and 27-year old center Jared Reiner to training camp. Singletary played in 37 games (2 starts) for the Suns and Bobcats as a rookie last season. He averaged 8.2 minutes, 2.4 points, 0.9 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game. But, he didn’t shoot too well hitting only 36.5% of his shots from the floor. Reiner last played in the NBA during the 2006-07 season with the Bucks. He has played in 46 games (4 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 8.2 minutes, 1.2 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. Reiner has not shot the ball well at all in the NBA hitting only 34.2% from the floor and 28.6% from the free throw line. Singletary might be able to help the Sixers off the bench but if Reiner makes the team and gets to play the Sixers will be in trouble.

UPDATE: Singletary as well as Stromile Swift have been released by the 76ers.

The Philadelphia 76ers bring back Rodney Carney

Blogged under Big Sixers News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Wednesday 16 September 2009 at 11:33 pm

The Sixers have signed 25-year old SG/SF Rodney Carney bringing him back to where he played the first two years of his NBA career. Carney played in 67 games (6 starts) for the T-Wolves last season and he averaged 17.9 minutes, 7.2 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. In his three years in the NBA, Carney has played in 204 games (47 starts) in which he has averaged 16.7 minutes, 6.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. This was a good move for the Sixers as Carney should help them off the bench this season.
