The Philadelphia 76ers went into the All-Star break with a 27-29 record which has them in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division, 14 games behind the Celtics. They are sitting in the #7 slot in the Eastern Conference right now. They are only 2 games behind the Knicks for 6th place but they are only ahead of the Pacers (2 games), Bobcats (3 games) and Bucks (5.5 games) by small margins so they have little room for error. Doug Collins has done an outstanding job coaching up the Sixers roster and they look like a playoff team to me right now.
Biggest Surprise: 31-year old Elton Brand had a pretty awful year for the Sixers in 2009-10. So they were thinking that he might be on the downside of his career but he has been very solid for them this season. Brand has played in 55 games (all starts) for the 76ers so far this year and he is averaging 34.7 minutes, 15.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.1 blocked shots per game on 52.2% shooting from the floor. Brand has also been a leader on the court and a great example for the younger players on the team. The Sixers need Brand to finish this season strongly if they are going to make it back to the playoffs.
Biggest Disappointment: 23-year old Marreese Speights just doesn’t work hard enough for Doug Collins to trust. That’s a shame because Speights has a lot of talent. He has played in 45 games (1 start) for the Sixers so far this year and he is averaging 11.6 minutes, 5.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. He is shooting 50.8% from the floor and 75% from the free throw line, so the talent it there. The one thing the Sixers can’t do is deal him because a different coach might inspire him and then the Sixers would have egg on their faces.
